Would eliminating illegal immigrants kill restaurants?

Recently, celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain had some strong words about Donald Trumps stance on illegal immigration.

“If Mr. Trump deports 11 million people or whatever he’s talking about right now, every restaurant would shut down,” Bourdain said.

Bourdain’s assertion is one of hyperbole.  If Trump’s policy was to be implemented, there would certainly be some pain for restaurateurs but it would not be the death of all of them.  There are many restaurants that do not employ illegal immigrants and follow the law as they should.  Those restaurants would not be affected by Trump’s policy.  Only the restaurants that illegally hire workers that do not have any right to be here would be affected.

Unfortunately, Bourdain and general business leaders are not telling us is that being allowed to employ illegal immigrants allows them to enjoy reduced labor costs.  Rather than allowing the wages to be artificially depressed by government policy, they would instead be allowed to determined by free market forces.

Despite the rhetoric, this is one area where Trump is right.
