Facebook sucks [Share]

Well, that is not exactly what the following linked article says but I think it is a good two-word summary. Basically, a former Facebook executive speaks out about the role that Facebook and other social media is having on our lives. This phenomenon is not just about America or even how Russia engaged in cyberwarfare against us using it. It is a world-wide problem.

It has turned us against each other. It has allowed hate mongers to spread their propaganda and misinformation. It has allowed special interests more control over our lives. While it can be said that social media has created some good in the world, it has greatly amplified the bad.

Former Facebook exec says social media is ripping apart society

Another former Facebook executive has spoken out about the harm the social network is doing to civil society around the world. Chamath Palihapitiya, who joined Facebook in 2007 and became its vice president for user growth, said he feels “tremendous guilt” about the company he helped make. “I think we have created tools that are ripping apart the social fabric of how society works,” he told an audience at Stanford Graduate School of Business, before recommending people take a “hard break” from social media.

  1. I both love and hate facebook. I love the ability to instantly share news, photos, etc with friends and family. I even love some of the games. I HATE with a passion the comments by total strangers berating each other, spewing forth their disgusting vomitus of hate. I am ready once again to close the account and just email those people I love. I’d lose a bunch of blogs that I only follow there though.
